The trial in the high-profile case involving the death of 21-year-old Nuraı Serikbai is continuing in Shymkent.
On August 11, Judge Samiddin Temiraliev of the Specialized Interdistrict Criminal Court of Shymkent said that a second psychological assessment of defendant Sherkhan Aımakhan would not be conducted. His lawyer, Serik Abdiev, had previously requested the additional examination.
The defense maintains that Aımakhan was in a state of affect at the time of the killing and was unable to fully understand his actions. However, a psychological assessment conducted earlier did not support these claims.
The judge also stated that the defendant’s testimony given on January 13 had been declared inadmissible and would be removed from the case file.
During the hearing, the lawyer representing the victim’s family referred to the defendant’s earlier claims that he had allegedly been subjected to moral and physical pressure during the investigation. The lawyer asked Aımakhan whether he had reported these allegations to the relevant authorities. The defendant said he had not filed a complaint with the police.
The prosecutor has requested a life sentence for Sherkhan Aımakhan.
Earlier, Nuraı Serikbai’s family sought more than 10 billion tenge in compensation.
