Waste-to-energy plants are planned to be built in Astana, Almaty and Shymkent. Kazakhstan has signed agreements with three Chinese investors to implement projects for the energy recovery of waste.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the plants will not simply burn all incoming waste. First, the waste will be sorted and recyclable materials will be separated. Only waste that cannot be recycled will be sent for thermal treatment.
The new facilities are expected to be equipped with automated emissions monitoring systems and modern purification technologies. The equipment is planned to meet European environmental standards.
There are currently no operating waste incineration plants in Kazakhstan. The implementation of the new projects is expected to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and allow part of the waste to be used for energy generation.
At the same time, environmental safety will remain a key concern. Continuous emissions monitoring and the effective operation of purification systems will be particularly important once the facilities become operational.
