A comprehensive plan has been approved in the Turkistan Region to support the nationwide initiative to plant 2 billion trees across Kazakhstan.
Under the regional plan, 170 million seedlings are to be planted across 110,000 hectares of the region’s forest fund between 2021 and 2027. During 2021–2025, 146 million seedlings were planted across 96,000 hectares, exceeding the target by 16% and reaching 116% of the planned level.
In 2026–2027, the remaining 24 million seedlings are expected to be planted across 14,000 hectares. This was reported at a meeting chaired by Turkistan Region Akim Nurlakhan Kusherov.
The regional head instructed relevant authorities to further intensify landscaping efforts and establish systematic care for planted trees.
“Landscaping efforts in populated areas need to be strengthened. Particular attention should be paid to the quality of seedlings. Intensify care for young trees and strictly monitor their timely planting, watering and fencing. We have the opportunity to fully provide ourselves with seedlings and perennial flowers without importing them from other regions. This opportunity should be used effectively. In this regard, I instruct you to develop a comprehensive plan. In addition, ensure the full and high-quality completion of the dendrological plan,” Kusherov said.
At the meeting, Galymzhan Tulepov, head of the regional Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Regulation, reported on the progress of landscaping efforts in populated areas.
According to him, agricultural preparation works were carried out across 13,600 hectares in March this year. To provide districts and cities with planting material, 509,700 seedlings are planned to be produced in autumn 2026 and another 530,600 in spring 2027.
In addition, 4,318 kilograms of seeds were sown during the spring season, while a further 6,498 kilograms are planned to be sown in autumn.
As part of the President’s instruction, Kazakhstan has set a five-year target to plant more than 15 million trees in populated areas. Under this plan, 1.1 million seedlings are to be planted in populated areas of the Turkistan Region.
Last year, 1,065,139 seedlings of various tree species were planted across the region. This year, the region plans to plant 1 million trees, including 332,500 seedlings planted during the spring season.
A working group has also been established to monitor the condition of trees planted in 2025–2026. Measures have included fencing, watering and monitoring the survival rate of the seedlings. As a result, the survival rate of planted trees reached 64%.
In accordance with the regional akim’s instructions, land plots have been allocated and nurseries established in 13 districts and cities. However, although nurseries were established in Baidibek and Tolebi districts, the required work has not yet been fully completed in line with established standards.
According to district and city akimats, 467,365 seedlings were planted during the spring season across a total area of 47.82 hectares. These seedlings are expected to be ready for planting during the autumn 2027 and spring 2028 seasons. Work in this area will continue in autumn, with additional seed sowing planned at nurseries.
As part of the implementation of the dendrological plan, inventory and digitalization of the urban green fund are also underway. To date, information on 503,306 trees has been entered into the Turkistan Region Geoportal.
Currently, 14 permanent nurseries with a total area of 250 hectares are operated by municipal state institutions under the regional department. The nurseries are growing 12.3 million seedlings representing 21 species of trees and shrubs.
