There are currently 151 solid waste disposal sites in the Turkistan Region. Of these, 28 belong to districts, 37 are located in rural districts, and another 40 have been transferred to trust management.
An analysis showed that most of the region’s landfills do not meet sanitary and environmental requirements. The issue was discussed at an administrative meeting chaired by Turkistan Region Akim Nuralhan Kusherov.
The head of the regional Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Galymzhan Tolepov, presented a report on the current condition of solid waste disposal sites and the measures being taken to improve them.
A 2024–2026 action plan has been approved to optimize existing landfills and bring them into compliance with established requirements. The plan provides for the consolidation and closure of 51 landfills located near each other and serving neighboring settlements.
In 2024, 24 landfills were optimized, followed by another 18 in 2025. Four more sites have been optimized during the first seven months of this year, while five additional landfills are scheduled to be closed by the end of the year.
Work is also underway to bring existing landfills into compliance with sanitary standards. Relevant measures have already been carried out in the Maktaral, Zhetisay, Ordabasy, Sozak, Tulkubas and Sairam districts.
Significant work is being carried out in the Sozak district. 1.7 billion tenge has been allocated for the construction of seven new landfills. Construction of the Karatau, Karakur and Zhuantobe sites was completed in 2024. Construction of facilities in Shu, Tasty, Sholakkorgan and the Syzgan rural district began in 2025. The projects are scheduled for completion in October 2026.
Fire prevention at waste disposal sites is also under close monitoring. District and city akimats have developed and approved step-by-step action plans. Responsible specialists and special equipment have been assigned to the sites to ensure that appropriate measures can be taken within one hour in the event of a fire.
Work to eliminate illegal dumps is continuing as well. According to aerial surveys conducted by Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary, 249 illegal waste disposal sites were identified in 2025, and all of them were fully cleaned up. In May and June this year, 242 additional sites were identified, followed by eight more in July. Cleanup efforts are currently underway.
Particular attention is being paid to developing infrastructure for separate waste collection, sorting and recycling. At present, 15 entrepreneurs are engaged in manual waste sorting, while five businesses operate in waste recycling.
To further develop the sector, the Turkistan Region has been divided into six zones. Entrepreneurs specializing in waste recycling have been assigned to each zone based on proposals from district and city akimats.
As part of the Aуыл аманаты project, entrepreneurs receive loans at reduced interest rates to support their businesses and stimulate the development of waste recycling.
Following the meeting, Nuralhan Kusherov instructed local authorities to improve the condition of landfills, increase the quality of their maintenance and raise the share of recycled waste.
The regional akim also ordered strict monitoring of fire prevention measures at landfills, timely cleanup of illegal dumps and stronger inspection activities by local authorities to prevent the emergence of new unauthorized waste disposal sites.
