A ceremony marking the opening of the building of the future Kazakhstan-China Joint Earthquake Research Center was held in Almaty.
The event was attended by Minister of Emergency Situations, Lieutenant General Chingis Arinov; Almaty Mayor Darkhan Satybaldy; Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Almaty Su Fanqiu; representatives of the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration; government officials; members of the scientific community; and invited guests.
The opening of the facility marks an important milestone in the development of Kazakhstan-China cooperation in the field of seismic safety.
The Kazakh side has established the necessary infrastructure to support the future joint Center. As part of efforts to further develop bilateral scientific cooperation ahead of the signing of an intergovernmental agreement on the establishment of the Kazakhstan-China Joint Earthquake Research Center, an Earthquake Research Center has been established within the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research.
The new center includes three specialized laboratories. Their functions correspond to the planned structure of the future joint Center, allowing joint scientific research to begin at the current stage.
To facilitate this work, Kazakhstan’s National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research under the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding on scientific and technical cooperation in geophysics and seismology.
The joint project is expected to usher in a new stage of scientific cooperation between Kazakhstan and China. Research findings are expected to contribute significantly to the development of modern methods for monitoring and forecasting seismic activity, as well as to strengthening seismic safety in both countries.
