Convicted Bakhytzhan Baizhanov has been released from prison based on a court ruling applying the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On Amnesty in Connection with the Adoption of the New Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
The submission to the court was filed by the head of the correctional institution where Baizhanov was serving his sentence.
The Stepnogorsk City Court reviewed the request submitted by the head of the institution regarding the reduction of Baizhanov’s sentence. The basis for the appeal was the amnesty law adopted in connection with the approval of the new Constitution.
According to the document, the act of clemency may apply to individuals convicted of serious or especially serious crimes who do not have a negative behavioral record. At the time the amnesty is applied, the convicted person must have no more than one year remaining before the end of their sentence. In such cases, the remaining portion of the main sentence is reduced.
Bakhytzhan Baizhanov has been released from the correctional facility. However, the court ruling has not yet entered into legal force.
Earlier, it was reported that on May 13, 2024, the court sentenced Kuandyk Bishimbayev to 24 years in a maximum-security correctional facility for the torture and particularly brutal murder of Saltanat Nukenova. His relative Bakhytzhan Baizhanov was sentenced to four years in a medium-security correctional facility for concealing a particularly serious crime.
